What do I need to know before I start this course?

As you will see in the free preview video on my expectations, you do need to have a grounding in picture books before you begin. Gotta have the foundation before you can build the house!

Here's the breakdown:

  • A thorough understanding of what a picture book is and is not in terms of format, illustrations, and language use.
  • A thorough understanding of the types of picture books being published today.
  • A thorough understanding what elements make the picture book unique among books for children.
  • A working knowledge of picture book terminology and characteristics, such as spreads, page counts, language devices, and rhyming elements.
  • Access to the books used in the course. They should all be readily available through your local library or bookstore or from online sellers. If you find some that you really enjoy, I encourage you to buy a few to support the authors and illustrators, just as you will want to have your books purchased if you decide to write a book and get it published. You can always give them away to a child, school, or library if you decide not to keep them!

If you need this foundation, check locally for classes, search on the Internet or enroll in my course, Children's Picture Books 101: What to Know Before You Write.
